Tricia: Let’s Get Outside

Spring is finally here!!!

I don’t know about you, but I am completely in love with this time of the year (minus the time change, lol). Now that the weather is nicer and the snow is hopefully done and over with, I love hitting the outdoors. There is something so energizing about being outside and taking a walk. For me personally, it refreshes and fills me with joy. I also find that it is so good for the kids.  At my son’s school they practice DPA (daily physical activity). It’s usually for about 10-15 minutes where everyone goes outside and walks around the school and takes in the outdoors. If it’s raining or bad weather, they do something indoors to get everyone moving. They usually have DPA first thing in the morning. The principal said that the intent for doing it then is to get the kids moving and to wake up any sleepyheads. I love this concept SO much.

I have been trying to be more intentional about going outside with the kids more.  As we all know, this season of good weather tends to go by way too quickly, so I want to make the most of it. Sometimes it doesn’t always work out the way I hoped it would when I tell the kids that we’re going out for a walk. They whine or say they’re tired, but I still put my foot down and make us go out. What I’ve found is that once we do get outside their mood changes pretty quickly. They suddenly love it and are the happiest kids, seriously.

So here are some benefits that I have found with hitting the outdoors:

  1. It’s good exercise
  2. It’s an instant mood changer
  3. Nature is good for the soul
  4. Kids can burn off energy
  5. God’s handiwork is all around
  6. There’s no cost involved

These are just a few reasons why I absolutely love going outside. This Spring lets push ourselves a little bit more and take in the outdoors. Even if you can only start with 10 minutes, that is still better than nothing. I am sure that you will come to love this simple activity and it could be just what you needed to add more Spring into your steps!
