I’ve heard lots of good things about the cotton gauze baby blankets and have been on the hunt for some on sale but have had no such luck. I stumbled upon a diy tutorial and thought “why haven’t I thought of that”?? These blankets are honestly the easiest thing to make and are so much cheaper when you do them yourself!
My mom, Hannah and I ventured out to fabricland this week to check out their latest sale. Turns out they had a buy one meter get two free sale and I was able to pick up enough material to make three blankets for $10!! Hannah wasn’t as impressed with my find as I was and screamed the whole time we were there…which ended up getting us quicker service so it turned out to be in our favour 🙂 Fabricland had a good variety of colours and patterns but you could always purchase white and dye it whatever colour you like.
What’s needed?
- 1 meter of cotton gauze/muslin material
- thread
- scissors or rotary cutter
- measuring tape
- sewing machine
As I said earlier these blankets are incredibly easy to make! You literally only need to be able to cut and sew in a straight line. First thing I did was measure and out a 30″ x 30″ square of material. Then I folded and ironed a 1/4″ hem. If you’re not particular about the straight edge and want to save time you can forget the ironing and just fold and pin down your hem. Last but not least I sewed down the edges with a zig-zag stitch and ta-da it’s done!
These blankets are hands-down my favourite for Hannah. I use them for tummy time, swaddling, and they’re great as a windbreaker without making her too warm. They also make great gifts for baby showers! You can even personalize them by adding your own monogram or applique.

I just made a few baby blankets but made them out of flannelette. I’ll have to look for the gauze material next time! Thanks for the idea!
